Ox was founded by Charu Thomas in 2017. Charu’s first job was in a food distribution center that served McDonald’s North America, where she built automation and process improvement tools within the supply chain. While full automation systems were incredibly efficient, they required huge capital expenditures & space, and just didn’t make sense from an ROI standpoint in some cases. It prompted her to consider other options to enable more efficiency without large infrastructure changes.
While pursuing her degree in Industrial & Systems Engineering from Georgia Tech’s #1 ranked program, she stumbled upon a research opportunity in wearable technology with the premier expert in the field, Thad Starner. She learned about the value of software & hardware-enabled software as a potential way to minimize infrastructure changes while improving efficiency.
As she learned more about retail distribution and supply chain, she realized another important piece of the puzzle: retailers have been around for hundreds of years and have built their supply chain to handle store fulfillment, not individual item fulfillment. In order to effectively meet their customers’ needs, they would be required to overhaul their entire supply chain. But retailers have an interesting option: the biggest advantage they have over a true omnichannel retailer is their stores. What if they could transform their stores into micro-distribution centers?
That’s the underlying idea that drives us at Ox today.
